Western North Carolina Bed and Breakfast
Historical Boarding House in continuous operation since 1897

Herren House was constructed as a boarding house in 1897 by M.J. Ownby, who named it the Savannah. It was given the name Herren House around 1918 by its second owner, Mollie Herren, and her daughters, Jessica and Lucile. Lucile married Henry Bowman Foy, Jr. and in 1924, Henry B. Foy III, present mayor of Waynesville, NC, was born in an upstairs bedroom.

Herren House continued in operation as a boarding house through the years with two more owners, Dollie Ferguson from 1935 to1970 and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Grahl from 1970 to1989.

The enormous restoration project began in 1989, saving many of the original features, including the solid oak central hall stairway, the old downstairs parlor (now a bedroom), and fireplace fronts and mantelpieces. What could not be restored – like the unique porch railing -- was painstakingly replicated. The outside is painted a soft coral pink trimmed in porcelain and eggplant.

Current owners, Tom and Jenny Halsey, have added touches to soften the vintage interior. With a country cottage feel, their collections of books, china, antiques and interesting and whimsical knick knacks provide a casual warmth throughout.

Evenings can be spent reading or sipping your favorite beverage in the gazebo and gardens. Good conversation and laughter fill the air just as it was many years ago.
